We had quite a week leading up to the Championship, what with vehicles breaking down and having to making other arrangements to get everything to the Greyhound. At least the weather was going to be fine this year.
We set up the office at which point I realised that I had misplaced (lost) the score sheets, Mol spent the next half an hour cutting, pasting and printing out a new one.
In addition to the usual contests, as a one off, we ran a “Royal Wedding Challenge”. This competition was for any married couples, and was a very simple pairs knockout tournament.
29 marbles in a heart shape ready for the Royal Wedding Challenge
Since last Easter Julia and Zachary have made two marbles related trips to the USA. In June they attended the National Marbles Tournament in Wildwood, New Jersey, where Zachary was invited to be a guest referee. Then in the autumn they visited two marbles factories, Marble King, in West Virginia and Jabo, in Ohio – and a good supply of beautiful tolleys, which they brought back were on the marbles stand at the front of the pub.
On the pub wall next to the marbles stall was a new plaque awarded to The Greyhound, home of the marbles tournament, as one of the Famous Grouse top 100 pubs in the country. Inside the bar there were lots of new marbles pictures on display.
This year we said a fond farewell to Tinsley Green’s longest established and most successful lady player. Having played in the tournament since the mid 1980’s, won the Nina Cohen Trophy 12 times, and the team title with The Barrel Scrapers, Jen McGowan will shortly be emigrating to New Zealand. Jen has done a huge amount for marbles over the years and as well as thanking her for her support I wish her and Kyle the very best of luck in their new life.
The Golden Oldies had 25 contestants and I would like to take this opportunity to thank David and Mike of the 49ers for both organising and refereeing the Golden Oldies. I would also like to thank all the players from other teams who refereed matches on the day and of course to Mol the main tournament referee who spend most of the time looking after the main ring
