The Germans arrived early

Around 300 hundred people saw 21 teams take part in this years tournament, joining eight teams from Sussex, ten from further a field were three German teams. The Germans had driven through Europe, playing in continental contests before arriving at Tinsley Green. The weather was sunny but very windy.

I arrived early as usual and was met by a film crew from Germany the cameraman had set up on the main ring and after some discussion on his mobile he began filming down Radford Road. After a few minutes a German camper van came into sight, followed by another and then another and another until there were thirteen in all. They drove into the Greyhound car park an around the main ring. It looked to me just like an old west wagon train arriving. The next day we took them down to Arundel, all in convoy – it was quite an experience I can tell you.
